The issue is not poor children but family poverty |
The last few weeks have seen much hand wringing about the continuing high levels of child poverty in Canada. Various solutions are offered such as increasing the basic benefits provided to parents of low-income children, improving educational practice, as well as a hodgepodge of measures designed to make living in poverty more palatable (e.g., free dental care for poor children, removing recreation fees, etc.)
These seem to me to be half-measures all designed to somehow "help" children who find themselves living in poverty. To my mind these proposals are misguided at best and dangerous at worst. There is much truth in the recent statement by Industry Minister James Moore that the federal government is not responsible for feeding Canadians. That Canada has no national programs aimed at reducing food insecurity makes this clear.
Indeed, the federal government, whether we like it or not (and I don't), is not responsible, as Moore implies, for hungry children - or hungry adults, for that matter - and has never, to my knowledge, claimed to be. The question is whether as a society we are comfortable with this policy regarding food insecurity.

Donating isn't a long-term solution for poverty and hunger |
My twins started kindergarten last September. By the end of the year, they had taken part in two food bank drives and multiple bake sales to raise money for all sorts of good causes. I am glad that the school is fostering a sense of social responsibility and that my children are thinking about others. However, I am concerned that the only solution they are learning to address issues of poverty and hunger is to donate. The slogan of our schools has become "bring your money". |

How a Guaranteed Annual Income Could Put Food Banks Out of Business |
The government could go a lot further toward the reduction of poverty in Canada by building on the success of its income supports for seniors, and making them available to poor Canadians of all ages. |
