Banking on Food - Sorting through the food crisis

There's a growing sense of discontent amongst a group of retirees determined to get laid off - from volunteering at food banks.

Freedom 90 is an advocacy group started in Ontario that has spread throughout the country made up of vocal seniors, many in their 60s and 70s, who want to retire from volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens before they turn 90.

Ironically, their end goal is to make obsolete the food charities they helped create and continue to sustain.

Banking on Food - Food bank use on the rise in B.C.

According to Qualicum Beach author and emeritus professor Graham Riches, food banks may just be the driving force behind food insecurity.

"Without people really realizing it we've moved from a system of income security or income transfers and social security to a system of food transfers and food aid which is what you would expect in the Third World, but not in Canada," Riches told The NEWS.

"The longer we have food charity and people supporting it and not asking critical questions about it we're not going to find ways to ensure people are not hungry."

Virtually anybody can fall victim to food insecurity - and according to Food Banks Canada more than 850,000 people turn to food banks each month, a number that's been on the rise since 2008.
